Powerful Poets

Welcome to the new decade! We in 4E all had a restful and fun filled break from school, and have returned ready to work hard as we turn the corner towards the second half of our year.

In writers workshop the student's have been working on creating personal narrative pieces. They have been practicing using the "Show Don't Tell" strategy where they paint a picture in their reader's mind through the use of juicy details, high powered language, and dialogue.

This week in readers workshop we have been practicing using our imaginations to help us fully comprehend what we are reading. This strategy involves activating all of our senses as we read to help us understand what is happening in the text.

The students combined both of these strategies as they created sensory poems using the computer program Inspiration during technology with Mrs. Gross. They were asked to imagine a place/event that was special to them and create a poem using all of their senses to describe that place/event. The poems were so thoughtful, beautiful and witty that I couldn't keep them to myself. Here are some samples for you to enjoy.

The Ocean
The sun reflecting off the water
Misty ocean air
The salty sea water
The seagulls shrieking loudly
The icy blue water
Why would I ever leave
By: Abby

The Beach
Suntan lotion
Wet Sand
Seagulls chirping
Creaminess of ice cream
The tan on my back
I'm in paradise
By: Nate

Nature
I see pine trees in the forest
I smell the fresh air
I taste the crisp, dry air
I feel the rough bark of the pines
I hear beautiful birds singing
By: Curtis

Lake
The still lake just sitting there
Boat fuel and burgers
Tasty BBQ on the boat
free and happy
All the motor boats zooming
This is the best place on earth
By: Rachel

Rainforest
Swinging trees
Dew on the grass
Fresh bananas
Soaked all over
A monkey call
I am surrounded by animals
By: Nathan

My house
I see my tan kitchen
I smell terrific sausage and bacon cooking on the stove
I taste the potato perogies
I feel calm sitting on my couch
I think my house is big and nice
